Os anos passam e muitas coisas mudam, porém, se existe algo que permanece intacto é a vinda de Hernán Cattaneo ao final de dezembro no Warung Beach Club. Sua data é associada a uma espécie de ‘’abertura das férias’’, onde fãs de todo o país escolhem o litoral norte Catarinense para veraneio. Além de aproveitarem as belas praias, celebram a noite mais aguardada do ano, considerada um verdadeiro clássico da cena sul americana – o all night long do ‘’el maestro’’ no templo da música eletrônica.

Essa não era uma noite comum, estava rodeada de detalhes e acontecimentos que preciso retratar neste review. Então, peço desculpas se me alongar e também se o set em si não for tão detalhado como de costume.

Primeiro, a noite era de comemoração de 20 anos do Argentino no clube. Isso mesmo, Hernán está presente desde o início, com sua primeira vinda em fevereiro de 2003, apenas 3 meses após a abertura. Quantos DJs que estavam no auge naquela época, ainda permanecem tocando regularmente no clube? Basicamente ele, Sasha e Dubfire, porém ambos só estrearam em 2006. Hernán é sem dúvidas o maior patrimônio musical internacional que o templo possui, e as comemorações a isso deveriam ser a altura desta relação tão longa e intensa.

Segundo, ele estava lançando seu livro ‘’O sonho de um DJ’’ na versão em português e, claro, não poderia ser em outro local se não o templo. Para minha honra, fui convidado para executar o projeto no Brasil, que consistia desde encontrar uma editora, até um tradutor e edição, a qual abracei com enorme entusiasmo. Um desafio nunca experimentado devido a tamanha confiança depositada em minha pessoa, afinal o livro chegava como um Best Seller na versão em espanhol. Com a parceria do meu grande amigo Gustavo Caon Loef, consegui que os livros ficassem prontos uma semana antes da festa. Organizei com o staff do clube um coquetel pré-show com alguns fãs de longa data para uma sessão de autógrafos e fotos. Apesar do tempo apertado, tudo correu bem. Quero agradecer ao Bruno Loureiro por toda ajuda na organização deste evento. Foi uma felicidade enorme poder proporcionar esse momento para seus fãs, onde muitos a anos aguardavam por uma foto ou um minuto para falar a Hernán quanto o admiravam.

Sua história de vida e carreira se confundem e seu livro serve de inspiração para todos. De como um menino comum saiu do bairro de Caballito em Buenos Aires para se tornar um dos maiores DJs de todos os tempos.

Após o último autógrafo, Hernán subiu para dar início ao set. Ele não abre mão da pontualidade e 22h em ponto estava dando play. Os convidados do coquetel foram os primeiros clubbers a colar no front, que seria muito disputado durante toda a noite.

A primeira grande emoção vem ainda antes das 23h com ‘’Bahia’’ de Simon Vuarambon, um dos maiores clássicos dentro do catálogo da Sudbeat. Uma semana antes do show, eu havia enviado a ele a playlist ‘’Best Moments’’ no templo desde 2010, e como forma de agradecer ele simplesmente me pediu para escolher algumas músicas para tocar. Bahia era uma delas. Você pode ouvi-la no link abaixo;

Outro destaque do warm-up veio com um lindo vocal na faixa ‘’I’m Tied To You (Ivory Shiffted Reality remix) de Auggië feat Maurice Kaar, marcando essa primeira hora de leve tribal.

Na segunda hora a pista já estava cheia, aliás, essa poderia ter sido uma noite de sold out, não foi por puro detalhe. Hernán é o único artista do ano capaz de fazer a pista estar completa nesse horário, mostrando o poder atrativo de sua música e toda a mística que envolve seu famoso ‘’all night long’’.

Às 23h30 uma linda sequência com ‘’Tears’’ de Tim Green e outra das que eu havia selecionado da playlist com ‘’Lost In A Moment’’ de Matthew Dekay & Lee Burridge (Dixon Rework); até hoje um dos maiores lançamentos da Innervisions. Que momento, sua melodia é inconfundível e fez a pista se emocionar.  

‘’Detoner’’ de Ric Niels & Will Dekeizer, próximo da meia noite vem para mudar o tom do set, uma faixa mais rápida e envolvente, estávamos de fato saindo do esquenta para decolar em rota de colisão com o subconsciente.

À meia noite, se inicia o grande momento da festa, algo que com certeza entrou para a história do Warung e da carreira do Argentino. Os sócios do clube chegam no palco com um quadro de sua primeira apresentação. Um foco de luz se abre sobre a clássica bandeira do Brasil atrás do DJ, de repente, se desenrola a bandeira da Argentina por cima, Hernán aponta para ela e os abraça visivelmente emocionado.

Uma linda homenagem ao Mestre que sempre jogou no templo como se estivesse no Maracanã em uma final de copa do mundo. Comentei na pista com amigos; ‘’campeão do mundo ainda, agora ninguém segura’’.

A comoção na pista foi enorme e a partir deste momento parece que a energia se transformou. Foi um gol atrás do outro, com uma coleção de explosões eufóricas impressionantes. Tive o privilégio de assistir boa parte do set ao seu lado, e em faixas como ‘’Brothi’’ de Mike Griego, a 01h, era possível ver mãos se levantando até o fundo da pista, elas se confundiam com bandeiras da Argentina, mostrando que mais uma vez, os hermanos compareceram em peso.

Próximo das 02h, um vocal encantador começa a falar por cima de uma batida pesada, era a voz de Elizabeth, integrante do duo Pale Blue na faixa ‘’Dive’’ (Fort Romeau’s ‘Tranceadelic’ Mix). Os aplausos em meio às luzes de um azul oceânico completaram uma das cenas mais bonitas da noite. Que faixa!

Próximo das 03h, uma de minhas favoritas em todos esses anos o ouvindo no clube, mais uma das escolhidas em ‘’Best Moments’’ – ‘’The Bar Tender’’ de Seth Schwarz & Be Svendsen (Dark Soul remix). Ela foi tocada por ele em 2015 e até hoje me pego ouvindo no carro.

Na quinta hora entramos no momento mais escuro da noite, onde as luzes se alternam entre azul e vermelho, onde os braços baixam e um ritmo introspectivo toma conta da pista, esse é o período onde Hernán mais cresce e domina. Acelerando o bpm, mixando mais rápido sem perder a elegância, ele transforma o ‘’humor’’ da pista em algo mais pessoal e hipnótico.

É meu momento favorito de seus sets. Território Catta! Um clássico não poderia faltar e veio com a lendária ‘’Insomnia’’ de Faithless em um remix ID super intenso!

Perto das 05h começou a surgir no fundo da pista o tão aguardando tom laranja em cima do mar. Hernán escolheu um dos produtores mais apropriados para momentos de catarse coletiva. A faixa ‘’Terca’’ de Petar Dundov deu o tom perfeito para o momento. Ele deixou loops de bateria por baixo para não perder o ritmo da pista que estava ‘’on fire’’.

Em seguida, era hora de ‘’acordar’’ novamente e o tom de obscuridade deu lugar a viagens mais emotivas. A primeira delas vem com Deep Dish em ‘’The Future Of The Future’’. Uma versão mais atual da faixa de 1998 do lendário duo Iraniano formado por Sharam e Dubfire. Que momento!!

‘’Deeper’’ (Zoo Brazil Remix) de Floormagnet mantém o tom viajante e a incrível ‘’Thunderbird’’ de Randall Jones & Ariaano chega para ser talvez o grande momento de explosão da noite. Foi como se o set fosse todo pensado para chegar até essa faixa. Que energia, algo mais próximo de um techno progressivo, não à toa foi lançada pela Bedrock de John Digweed.

Em seguida ele joga simplesmente ‘’Infusion’’ de Love & Imitation. Uma de minhas favoritas de todos os tempos, uma faixa atemporal. Ela me marcou demais quando comecei a descobrir o Warung, pois aparece em um vídeo promocional do Life Is a Loop de 2007, onde o Leozinho a coloca neste mesmo palco. É incrível como Hernán consegue combinar perfeitamente uma faixa lançada 2 semanas antes com um clássico de 17 anos atrás.

Depois de tanta euforia, o vocal distinto de HVOB em ‘’Capture Casa’’ (Ezequiel Arias edit) vem para trazer certa calmaria por alguns segundos, doce engano, a virada do break coloca tudo para cima de novo!

O vocal mais lindo da noite em minha visão chega após às 06h, com a luz do sol tomando a cabine, em ‘’Never Alone’’ de Whomadewho (Patrice Bäumel Remix)!

Em todos esses 20 anos de Warung, em dezenas de apresentações, você provavelmente não vai encontrar um set de Hernán que não tenha pelo menos 1 faixa do Depeche Mode. Talvez a banda mais remixada para as pistas de todos os tempos. Sempre surge alguma nova versão, e ‘’Only When I Lose Myself’’ (ID remix) foi para a velha guarda da pista cantar junto.

Próximo do final, Hernán trás um dos grandes clássicos de todos os tempos, ‘’Dark & Long’’ da banda Underworld. Sua melodia é inconfundível e ele a trouxe em uma versão de breakbeat que vai terminando aos poucos, sendo ideal para o fechamento. Só para relembrar, essa música fez parte da trilha sonora do consagrado filme ‘’Trainspotting’’ de 1996, considerado um dos 1000 melhores filmes já feitos.

Sob aplausos fervorosos e o tradicional canto de ‘’ole, ole ole, oleee, Hernán, Hernán’’, o mestre finaliza baixando o volume lentamente. Após alguns segundos de tensão, é liberado a última música, e para minha surpresa, ele dá o play em ‘’Love Stimulation’’ de Humate (Tom Middleton remix). Esta música fez parte das minhas escolhas e eu havia lhe dito que foi com ela que ele havia se tornado meu ídolo máximo. E o mais incrível, é que ele a tocou exatamente às 06h30 da manhã, assim como em 2010. Naquela oportunidade, ainda havia mais horas de set, porém foi o grande momento em que olhei ao redor e vi a pista toda de sorriso aberto balançando em uma vibe transcendental.

Nunca esqueci do poder dessa música pelas suas mãos. Até pensei em não mencioná-la, pois às vezes não devemos mexer em momentos eternizados. Porém, ao ver a pista toda envolvida novamente com seu vocal, melodia e baixo marcantes, tive a certeza que foi a escolha certa. As lágrimas vieram e a emoção tomou conta, Hernán vem até mim só para dizer ‘’é para você’’. Daria pra contar nos dedos os artistas que possuem tamanha nobreza e atenção para quem os segue.

Após tocar oito horas e meia, ele ainda atendeu os fãs pacientemente com fotos e uma rápida fala. Alguns segundos para quem tocou tantas horas parece muito, mas para quem está recebendo essa atenção do ídolo, são segundos muito valiosos e eternos, ele sabe disso.

É incrível ver gerações diversas na pista curtindo com a mesma intensidade, desde quem estava o vendo pela primeira vez, até quem já o viu ali dezenas de vezes – Hernán tem mais de 20 sets no templo, sempre com pelo menos 8 horas, façam as contas.

Escolhi duas frases de Alezandro Pont Lezica que estão na introdução de seu livro para ilustrar o sentimento do público ao final.

‘’temos que celebrar a sorte de ouvir seus sets e seu dom de gerar constantemente novas performances.’’

‘’…acima de tudo ele sabe como emocionar, comover e não passar despercebido.’’

Para quem se pergunta; ‘’por que a sua vinda no templo é chamada de a data do ano pelo público?’’

No seu livro é possível encontrar muitas respostas. Aqui vai uma. No início dos anos 90, um jovem DJ de 25 anos louco por house music voava até Nova Yorque só para aprender com o pai deste estilo, Sir Frankie Knuckles, que era residente do lendário Sound Factory bar. Hernán ficava em uma escadinha ao lado da cabine a noite inteira apenas para poder observar como Frankie mixava e controlava a pista. Hoje, é Hernán quem está no comando e tem fãs que buscam entender do que é feito sua mágica, em como consegue ter tamanho domínio do grave, groove e melodias, e da espantosa calma que leva uma noite do início ao fim, exatamente como Knuckles fazia. Hoje é Hernán quem faz o público ir embora apenas após a última música.

Ainda sobre a noite, com certeza o grande destaque foi o momento da descida da bandeira da Argentina, na hora, me veio à mente outra passagem de seu livro, escrita pela jornalista Constaza Bertolini;

‘’O homem de sorriso largo e olhar calmo, pode hoje olhar no espelho e ver o menino que ficava com o rosto colado no Winco (rádio e toca-discos dos anos 60), se orgulhar de como foi perseverante e paciente, de como aprendeu e superou a si mesmo e dizer – você estava certo.’’

Por momentos assim, tudo valeu a pena. Desde quando confrontou seu pai e as estruturas da sociedade no final dos anos 70 com ‘’O sonho de ser um DJ’’, seguiu seu coração e foi capaz de gerar uma comunidade global de seguidores que se movem de todos os lados para vê-lo algumas horas em puro estado de graça, flutuando em sua cabine, porque enquanto está ali, sua presença é inquestionável. Hoje, sua música fez um clube trocar a bandeira de seu país pela da Argentina, apenas para agradecê-lo por tantos e tantos anos, horas e momentos mágicos realizados com esta pista. Amanhã? Não sabemos, apenas posso repetir as palavras de Alejandro “seus melhores anos de criatividade ainda estão por vir’’.

Hernan Cattaneo releases his book in Portuguese at Templo with all night long

Years go by and many things change, but if there’s one thing that remains intact, it’s the arrival of Hernán Cattaneo at the end of December at Warung Beach Club. His date is associated with a kind of ”opening of the holidays”, where fans from all over the country choose the north coast of Santa Catarina for the summer. In addition to enjoying the beautiful beaches, they celebrate the most anticipated night of the year, considered a true classic of the South American scene – the all night long by ”el maestro” at the temple of electronic music.

This was not an ordinary night, it was surrounded by details and events that I need to portray in this review.

First, the night was to celebrate the Argentine’s 20th anniversary at the club. That’s right, Hernán has been there since the beginning, with his first presentation in February 2003, just 3 months after opening club. How many DJs who were at their peak at that time, are still playing regularly at the club? Basically he, Sasha and Dubfire, but both only debuted in 2006. Hernán is undoubtedly the greatest international musical heritage that the temple has, and the celebrations for that should be the height of this long and intense relationship.

Second, he was launching his book ”The DJ’s dream’’ in the Portuguese version and, of course, it could not be anywhere other than the temple. To my honor, I was invited to carry out the project in Brazil, which consisted of finding a publisher, to a translator and editing, which I embraced with great enthusiasm. A challenge never experienced due to the trust placed in me, after all the book arrived as a Best Seller in the Spanish version. With the partnership of my great friend Gustavo Caon Loef, I managed to have the books ready a week before the party. I organized with the club staff a pre-show cocktail party with some long-time fans for an autograph and photo session. Despite the tight time, everything went well. It was an enormous happiness to be able to provide this moment for his fans, where many years had been waiting for a photo or a minute to tell Hernán how much they admired him.

His life story and career are intertwined and his book serves as an inspiration for everyone. How an simple boy left the Caballito neighborhood of Buenos Aires to become one of the greatest DJs of all time.

After the last autograph, Hernán went up to start the set. He doesn’t give up on punctuality and at 10:00 pm he was giving play. Cocktail party guests were the first clubbers to join the front stage.

The first big emotion comes even before 11pm with ”Bahia” by Simon Vuarambon, one of the greatest classics within the Sudbeat catalogue. A week before the show, I had sent him the ”Best Moments” playlist at the temple since 2010, and as a way of saying thank you he simply asked me to pick some songs to play. Bahia was one of them.

Another highlight of the warm-up came with a beautiful vocal on the track ” I’m Tied To You (Ivory Shiffted Reality remix) by Auggië feat Maurice Kaar, marking this first hour of light tribal.

In the second hour the main floor was already full, in fact, this could have been a sold out night, it wasn’t for pure detail. Hernán is the only artist of the year able to make the floor complete at that time, showing the attractive power of his music and all the mystique that surrounds his famous “all night long”.

At 11:30 pm a beautiful sequence with ”Tears” by Tim Green and another one that I had selected from the playlist with ”Lost In A Moment” by Matthew Dekay & Lee Burridge (Dixon Rework); to date one of the biggest releases from Innervisions. What a moment, its melody is unmistakable and made the dance floor feel emotional.

”Detoner” by Ric Niels & Will Dekeizer, close to midnight comes to change the tone of the set, a faster and more engaging track, we were in fact leaving the heat to take off on a collision course with the subconscious.

At midnight, the big moment of the party begins, something that certainly went down in the history of Warung and the Argentinean’s career. Club owners arrive onstage with a painting of his first performance. A spotlight opens on the classic Brazilian flag behind the DJ, suddenly, the Argentine flag unfolds over it, Hernán points to it and hugs them, visibly moved.

A beautiful tribute to the master who always played in the temple as if he were in Maracanã in a world cup final.

The commotion on the dance floor was huge and from that moment on it seems that the energy has transformed. It was one gol after another, with an impressive collection of euphoric explosions. I had the privilege of watching a good part of the set at his side, and in tracks like ”Brothi” by Mike Griego, at 01:00, it was possible to see hands rising to the bottom of the dance floor, they were confused with Argentine flags, showing that once again, the brothers showed up in force.

Around 02:00, a charming vocal begins to speak over a heavy beat, it was the voice of Elizabeth, member of the duo Pale Blue in the track ”Dive” (Fort Romeau’s ‘Tranceadelic’ Mix). The applause amid the oceanic blue lights completed one of the most beautiful scenes of the night. What a track!

Around 03h, one of my favorites in all these years listening to him in the club, another one chosen in ”Best Moments” – ”The Bar Tender” by Seth Schwarz & Be Svendsen (Dark Soul remix). It was played by him in 2015 and to this day I find myself listening to it in the car.

In the fifth hour we enter the darkest moment of the night, where the lights alternate between blue and red, where the arms lower and an introspective rhythm takes over the dance floor, this is the period where Hernán grows the most and dominates. Accelerating the bpm, mixing faster without losing elegance, he transforms the ”mood” of the dance floor into something more personal and hypnotic.

 It’s my favorite moment from his sets. Catta Territory! A classic could not be missing and it came with the legendary ”Insomnia” by Faithless in a super intense ID remix!

Around 05:00, the long-awaited orange tone began to appear at the bottom of the dance floor over the sea. Hernán chose one of the most appropriate producers for moments of collective catharsis. Petar Dundov’s track ”Terca” set the perfect tone for the moment. He left drum loops underneath so as not to lose the rhythm of the people that was ”on fire”.

Then it was time to ”wake up” again and the tone of obscurity gave way to more emotional journeys. The first of them comes with Deep Dish in ”The Future Of The Future”. A more current version of the 1998 track by the legendary Iranian duo Sharam and Dubfire. What moment!!

‘’Deeper’’ (Zoo Brazil Remix) by Floormagnet maintains the traveling tone and the incredible ‘’Thunderbird’’ by Randall Jones & Ariaano arrives to be perhaps the great moment of explosion of the night. It was as if the set was all designed to get to this track. That energy, something closer to progressive techno

Then he simply plays ”Infusion” by Love & Imitation. One of my all time favorites, a timeless track. It made a big impression on me when I started discovering Warung, It’s amazing how Hernán manages to perfectly combine a track released 2 weeks before with a classic from 17 years ago.

After so much euphoria, HVOB’s distinct vocal in ”Capture Casa” (Ezequiel Arias edit) comes to bring some calm for a few seconds, sweet deceit, the break turn puts everything back on top!

The most beautiful vocal of the night in my vision arrives after 06:00, with the sunlight filling the cabin, in ”Never Alone” by Whomadewho (Patrice Bäumel Remix)!

In all these 20 years of Warung, in dozens of performances, you probably won’t find a Hernán set that doesn’t have at least 1 Depeche Mode track. Perhaps the most remixed band of all time. Some new version always comes out, and ”Only When I Lose Myself” (ID remix) went to the old fas of the dance floor to sing along.

Near the end, Hernán brings one of the great classics of all time, ”Dark & Long” by the band Underworld. Its melody is unmistakable and he brought it in a breakbeat version that gradually ends, being ideal for closing. Just to remind you, this song was part of the soundtrack of the 1996 film ”Trainspotting”, considered one of the 1000 best films ever made.

Under fervent applause and the traditional chant of ”ole, ole ole, oleee, Hernán, Hernán”, the master ends by slowly lowering the volume. After a few tense seconds, the last song is released, and to my surprise, he plays Humate’s ”Love Stimulation” (Tom Middleton remix). This song was part of my choices and I had told him that it was with it that he had become my ultimate idol. And the most amazing thing is that he played it at exactly 06:30 in the morning, just like in 2010. On that occasion, there were still more hours of set, but it was the great moment when I looked around and saw the whole dance floor with open smiles swaying in a transcendental vibe.

I never forgot the power of this music by his hands. I even thought about not mentioning it, because sometimes we shouldn’t touch on eternalized moments. However, when I saw the whole  dance floor involved again with its outstanding vocals, melody and bass, I was sure it was the right choice. The tears came and the emotion took over, Hernán comes to me just to say ”it’s for you”. You could count on your fingers the artists who have such nobility and attention to those who follow them.

After playing eight and a half hours, he still patiently attended the fans with selfies and a quick conversation. A few seconds for someone who played for so many hours sees like a lot, but for someone who is receiving this attention from the idol, it are very valuable and eternal seconds, he knows that.

It’s amazing to see different generations on the dance floor enjoying it with the same intensity, from those who were seeing him for the first time, to those who have seen him there dozens of times – Hernán has more than 20 sets at the temple, always with at least 8 hours!!

  I chose two phrases by Alezandro Pont Lezica that are in the introduction of his book to illustrate the audience feeling at the end.

For anyone wondering; ” Why is his coming to the temple called the date of the year by the public? ”

In his book you can find many answers. Here goes one. In the early 90s, a young 25-year-old DJ crazy about house music flew to New York just to learn from the father of this style, Sir Frankie Knuckles, who was a resident of the legendary Sound Factory bar. Hernán would sit on a stepladder next to the stage all night just so he could watch as Frankie mixed and controlled the dance floor. Today, it is Hernán who is in charge and has fans who seek to understand what his magic is made of, how he manages to have such mastery of bass, groove and melodies, and the amazing calm that takes a night from start to finish, just like Knuckles did. Today it’s Hernán who makes the audience leave just after the last song.

Still on the night, the highlight was certainly the moment of the descent of the Argentine flag, at the time, another passage from his book, written by journalist Constaza Bertolini, came to mind;

”The man with the wide smile and calm gaze, can now look in the mirror and see the boy who had his face glued to the Winco (a radio and record player from the 60s), be proud of how persevering and patient he was, how learned and surpassed himself and say – you were right.”

For moments like this it was all worth it. Ever since he confronted his father and society’s structures in the late 70’s with ”The Dream of Being a DJ”, he has followed his heart and been able to generate a global community of followers who move from all sides to see him for a few hours in a pure state of grace, floating in his cabin, because while he is there, his presence is unquestionable.

Today, his music made a club exchange its country’s flag for Argentina’s, just to thank him for so many years, hours and magical moments achieved with this club Tomorrow? We don’t know, I can only repeat Alejandro’s words ”his best years of creativity are yet to come”.
